Bonny Hills

BonnieHill This morning a troop of Australian Grey kangaroos bounded through my camp while I struggled to get my GoPro camera turned on. They were gone as quickly as they arrived. The greys are the taller kangaroos and these guys were between five and six feet tall. I saw a wallaby a few days ago at Broadwater beach. They are much smaller and fatter and covered in brown fur. The one I saw was about two feet tall and at first I mistook it for a dog.  Later on today I passed a herd of camels in a field across from a golf course. BonnieHill_04These were prime examples of high grade camel stock and not at all like the run down camels I saw in Egypt. I had heard that a Sheik a couple of hundred years ago, imported camels for use in the outback and ended up turning them loose. These feral camels bred in the wild and thrived in the Australian climate. They are considered genetically superior to camels in the middle east. Towards sundown I got rained on but it was a warm rain. I was passing through Bonny Hills on my way to a state campground at Crowdy Bay which I had heard was nice and also inexpensive. When the rain came I turned into the first caravan park I saw and asked about prices. They wanted $55 for an unpowered tent site!  I staggered away and headed south but at the top of the Bonny Hill there was another park. BonnieHill_02This one was much nicer and wanted $25 per night. After the initial shock of the first place, this seemed like a bargain. I was still 20k from my Crowdy Bay camp and the rain did not appear to be letting up so I shelled out the bucks and setup camp on the cliffs above the beach. In the morning I met two guys from Amsterdam who were on a surfing vacation. They told me I should check out the Netherlands for a bike tour.
