A saddle bag or tool bag is absolutely necessary on any tour. It should be large enough to hold all the basic repair tools and still have ample room left over for a spare tube or two. It should be easily accessible/removable and also be 100% waterproof. The only bag I know of that meets these requirements is the Ortlieb Large Saddlebag. I have been caught in drenching downpours and soaked to the bone and my tools remained bone dry inside one of these roll closure bags. They work.
