I received one of the first long awaited Xtracycle Leap Bolt-On Kits yesterday and spent the evening building up this test bike. It rides beautifully and was definitely worth the wait. There is no back-end sway which was a common complaint with the original Xtracycle Free Radical kits. The bike handles great with a load and the 180 disc rotor in the back allows for ample stopping power on the hills. I opted for a 203 rotor up front just to be on the safe side. The hills on St Thomas are brutal and I have a tendency to overload my bikes. Below is the build list and a series of photos. To keep the cost down I opted for a Nashbar 29er frame. This has a cromoly front triangle for some cushion and Hi-ten steel in the chain & seat stays for rigidity. Coupled with the Hi-ten Leap framework it seems to function well without breaking the bank. As a comparison, I just got a Surly Big Dummy frameset brought in by cargo ship and the total cost of frame and freight came to over $1500. So $775 for this frame/fork/Leap Kit comes in about half the price of the Dummy but in my opinion, a stronger finished bike.
